Q: #565. What are other names for Jerusalem in the Bible?
A: It is said by some Jewish sources that there are at least 70 different names for Jerusalem in the Hebrew Scriptures. However, in looking at these, I find most to be more like “descriptions” of Jerusalem rather than “names” actually used for it [i.e. “city of truth” – (Zech 8:3), “the perfection of beauty” – (Lam 2:15), “a city not forsaken” – Isa 62:12)]. Therefore, we will primarily focus here on other “names” that Jerusalem was called. Following is this list:
Salem – (Gen 14:18)(Ps 76:2)(Heb 7:1-2)
Jebus – (Josh 18:28 – “Jebusi” KJV)(Judg 19:10-11)(1 Chr 11:4-5)
Mt. Moriah – (2 Sam 5:7)(2 Chr 3:1)
Zion (used 153 times) – (2 Sam 5:7)(1 Kin 8:1)(Ps 78:68)(Ps 87:2)(Isa 60:14)(Zech 1:14,17)
City of David – (2 Sam 5:7)(2 Sam 6:12,16)(Isa 22:9)
Ariel – (Isa 29:1-2,7)
City of God – (Ps 87:3)(Ps 46:4)(Ps 48:1,8)
Holy City – (Neh 11:1,18)(Isa 52:1)(Dan 9:24)
