Q: #212. I am considering having an abortion. What does the Bible say about abortion?

A: Please let me pray for you first.

Dear Father in Heaven, as we deal with this topic of abortion, please open the heart and mind of this lady, or any lady reading this to know what you think about abortion. May these words be seen as given in love and concern for all involved. Please give guidance and wisdom to her or any who may be considering an abortion and help her to understand the dangers, consequences, and problems that result from abortions. Help her to see Your love for both her and her unborn child. We ask this in Jesus’ name, Amen.

There are approximately 2 million babies aborted a year in the U.S. Nearly 1 of every 3 babies conceived is aborted. Since abortion was legalized in 1973, there has been over 40 million babies aborted. It is estimated there may be as many as 75 million babies aborted around the world in a year. An abortion occurs every 15-20 seconds…

Let’s look in the Bible to see what God has to say about unborn children. First off, God clearly tells us that He knew us before we were even born, and fashioned us in the womb.

(Psalm 139:13-16) For thou hast possessed my reins: Thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb. (14) I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: Marvellous are thy works; And that my soul knoweth right well. (15) My substance was not hid from thee, When I was made in secret, And curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. (16) Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; And in thy book all my members were written, Which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.

(Jer 1:5) Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee….

(Isa 44:24) Thus saith the Lord, thy redeemer, And he that formed thee from the womb, I am the Lord that maketh all things;

(Isa 49:1) Listen, O isles, unto me; And hearken, ye people from afar; The Lord hath called me from the womb; From the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name.

Also see: (Ps 119:73)(Isa 49:5)(Job 10:8)

Think about that… God knew us from the beginning. Can anyone believe that God did not know us from the moment of conception? There are so many in the world today who would have us believe that a fetus is not really life, that it is just a blob of lifeless tissue. God certainly doesn’t see it that way… In fact, the KJV Bible does not even use the term “pregnant,” but rather, it uses the term “with child” (2 Sam 11:5)(1 Sam 4:19)(2 Kin 15:16)(Mt 1:23 / tie to Mt 1:20)(Mt 24:19)(Mk 13:17). At conception, a woman has an unborn child.

Some other words of God to consider in the Bible.

God hates the shedding of innocent blood and wants us to defend the weak and helpless: (Prov 6:16-17)(Prov 31:8-9)(Ps 82:2-4)(Ex 23:7). Is there anything more innocent and weak and helpless than an unborn infant?

In Exodus 21:22-24 God talks about the rights of the unborn saying that if a woman with an unborn child is struck so that she loses her child, the life of the one who struck her is to be taken. The penalty God made for taking that unborn child’s life was death. I state this simply to point out that abortion is also taking the life of an unborn child, and clearly God does not take that sin lightly for the one who is the offender.

Dear lady, please consider these facts about your unborn child. Your infant has:

A heartbeat between 18-21 days.
Brain waves at 40 days.
Vital organs function at 8 weeks.
At 11 weeks, the infant swallows, digests, tastes, hears, and sleeps.
At 20-25 weeks, it can survive outside of the womb.

The effects of abortion on the mother are rarely mentioned by those who advocate abortion. In nearly every case there are physical consequences which result. These range from depression, guilt, withdrawal, and shame to even more serious emotional problems and even suicide. The rate of suicide amongst those who have had abortions is much greater than that of the general population. Drug and alcohol problems can also occur as a result of a need to deaden the pain. In the future, if you ever do wish to have a child, the risk to both you and your baby can increase greatly if you have had an abortion. There is an increased risk for miscarriages, newborn death, being stillborn, more bleeding than normal, and an increased risk of breast cancer.

I believe it is also important to explain the tragic ways in which the unborn child is killed. There are 3 main methods used.

The first is called dilation and suction (DNS). This is often used during the first trimester. In this procedure, a vacuum is used to literally tear the child apart, and then then pieces of the child are sucked through a tube.

The second is often used in the second trimester. In this procedure, a needle is used to pierce the amniotic sack, the fluid is removed and replaced with a strong saline solution which basically burns the baby alive and then the dead body of the infant is expelled in 1-3 days.

The third is called a hysterotomy. This is used mainly in the third trimester. In this procedure, a drug is given which causes the child to be born prematurely. The infant is then killed (many times by inserting a sharp object into the brain), or it is just left to die.

These are many of the gruesome horrors attached to abortions. Those who perform these procedures don’t want you to know these facts. Abortion advocates are strong and very well funded from many sources. Abortion is a profitable business. Some make millions of dollars a year performing abortions. It is my prayer, as well as the prayer of countless others that you will seek alternatives to having an abortion. There are nearly 3000 Crisis Pregnancy Centers in the U.S. They can offer you all kinds of help with your pregnancy including medical care, counseling, housing, financial support, legal assistance, maternity and baby clothes, and information about adoption if you do not wish to keep your child. There are thousands of couples all over the country who are praying for an infant to take care of because they are unable to have a child of their own. You would be a tremendous blessing to these couples to give your baby a loving home with these parents. If you don’t know where a Crisis Pregnancy Center is in your area, you can check in the phone book under “abortion alternatives.” If you have internet access, you can do a search on any search engine using “Crisis Pregnancy Centers” and it will give you a list of sites that will give you phone numbers you can call. One of the best websites dealing with pro-life issues is at nrlc.org.

Please know that Jesus loves you. He loves your unborn child. He is our advocate and can help us through any trial we face in our life. If you have never made a decision in your life to trust in Jesus, please allow Him to come into your life and help. You can do this by going to our Jesus Died For You link right now.

For those of you who have had an abortion, I want to share this with you. God can and does forgive. He loves you! He says in the Bible that if we confess our sins and repent, He forgives, through the blood of Jesus (Eph 1:7)(1 Jn 2:12). I would plead with you as well to allow Jesus into your life if you have never done so by going to the link above.

Please consider these wonderful words given by David in (Psalm 32:1-5) as he shares the awesome blessing of the confession of his sins (among them a murder) and the forgiveness of God.

(Ps 32:1-5)(NASB) How blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, Whose sin is covered! (2) How blessed is the man to whom the Lord does not impute iniquity, And in whose spirit there is no deceit! (3) When I kept silent about my sin, my body wasted away Through my groaning all day long. (4) For day and night Your hand was heavy upon me; My vitality was drained away as with the fever heat of summer. (5) I acknowledged my sin to You, And my iniquity I did not hide; I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord;” And You forgave the guilt of my sin. Selah.

Proverbs 28:13 also addresses this saying, “He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: But whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.”

When God forgives our sin, the Bible says our sins will be removed as far as the east is from the west (Ps 103:12). (Micah 7:18-19) says, “Who is a God like unto thee, that pardoneth iniquity, And passeth by the transgression of the remnant of his heritage? He retaineth not his anger for ever, Because he delighteth in mercy. (19) He will turn again, he will have compassion upon us; He will subdue our iniquities; And thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.”

I would like to pray right now for all of you who have gone through an abortion.

Heavenly Father, we have seen your promises of forgiveness to those who confess their sins and repent of them. I ask you Lord to convict the hearts of those who have not come to trust in Jesus and turn their lives over to Him to do so today. You promise that the blood of Jesus will cover their sin and make them as white as snow. Help these ladies of all ages to find peace in their lives that only You can provide. Let them come to see how much You dearly love them. I ask that You would place friends in their lives who have a deep love for You and will give them support and strength, and pray in agreement with them for healing. Help them to find a well grounded Bible teaching church that will allow them to draw closer and closer to You. I pray Lord that You would not allow Satan to prevent these ladies from accepting and receiving Your love and forgiveness. We thank You and praise You Lord, and I pray this in agreement with each person who is reading this and asking it of You today. We ask this in Jesus’ name and through His precious blood shed for us all. Amen

I do believe the Bible teaches that children who have died are present right now with the Lord. If you have come to place your trust in Jesus Christ, you will one day be reunited with your child. Until that day arrives, I would ask you to prayerfully consider this. You CAN take this tragedy and work good from it. Work to help others who may be considering an abortion to not make the same mistake you did. Share how it affected you and the consequences that went with it. As I read through different sources preparing this article, the most touching and heart rending stories (and I believe the most likely to have an impact on those considering an abortion) came from those ladies who had gone through it themselves and had the courage to share it with others. There is no better counselor than the one who has been there before. You CAN make a difference!

I thank you for taking the time to read this, and I pray it has helped you in some way. May the Lord bless and keep you.
