Q: #86. What does the word "selah" mean?

By: Steve Shirley

A: Selah (See-luh) is a word that is used 71 times in the Psalms, and 3 times in Habakkuk (Hab 3:3,9,13). No one knows for sure what it means, but there are a LOT of guesses. The majority seem to agree that it has something to do with music; likely a musical notation or musical interlude/pause. It might also mean "take a moment to reflect on what was just said" or it might be something equal to when we say "Amen" today.

In the KJV Bible, there is also a city called Selah (2 Kin 14:7). (Sela in other translations.)
