Fear

By: Steve Shirley

     Fear means, basically, that we are anticipating something bad will happen to us before it actually does. Fear is a normal reaction to certain things, and there is nothing wrong with feeling fear, but how we deal with it and react to it can be the problem. Many times we try and run from this fear, or hide, instead of confronting it. If we let it keep us from going forward, it means a lack of trust in God, and it is making the problem bigger than God. God has made promises in the Bible to be with us at all times, so that no matter what happens, He is in control. He has also promised to give us the power to overcome. Pray for strength and guidance, then step out and confront what you are fearing. It can be reassuring to look back at past victories God has given you in times of fear and trouble. It is interesting that the words "fear not" are in the Bible 365 times (one for each day of the year).

     What the Bible says:

(2 Tim 1:7) For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

(Rom 8:15) For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

(Isa 41:10) Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.

(Josh 1:9) Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.

(Isa 41:13) For I the Lord thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee.

(Isa 35:4) Say to them that are of a fearful heart, Be strong, fear not: behold, your God will come with vengeance, even God with a recompence; he will come and save you.

(Deut 31:8) And the Lord, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, and he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed.

(Deut 31:6) Be strong and of good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the Lord thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.

(Ps 46:1-2) God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. (2) Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;

(Ps 27:1) The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

(Heb 13:5-6) Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. (6) So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.

(Mt 10:28) And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both body and soul in hell.

(Prov 29:25) The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the Lord shall be safe.

(Ps 118:6) The Lord is on my side; I will not fear: what can man do unto me?
